The research entities included in the Montado Living Lab are part of the Associated Laboratory CHANGE – Global Change and Sustainability Institute, a R&D institute whose mission is to identify scientifically supported public policy and governance solutions targeting an environmentally friendly, resource-efficient, and competitive economy in the context of ongoing global changes. CHANGE integrates three multidisciplinary R&D Centres, which are at the forefront of research in the areas of sustainability:

The governance of the Montado Living Laboratory is based on its governing bodies: the Coordinating Council, the Chair of the Council, the Executive Director, and the Assembly. There are also the Support Services that assist the other governing bodies.
Governance practices include interaction among these bodies, transparent decision-making processes, open communication with all partners, and frequent updates.
Coordinating Council
The Coordinating Council includes a representative from the University of Évora (who chairs the Coordinating Council), two representatives from the Research and Development entities, a representative from the Producers and Local Development Associations, and Public Administration bodies, a representative from companies linked to the Montado system, and three representatives from the Montado Landowners and Land managers.
The Coordinating Council is chaired by a researcher (Associate Professor with Habilitation, Full Professor, or Coordinating Researcher) appointed by MED/University of Évora and is assisted by an Executive Director.
In case a vote is required in the Coordinating Council, Research and Development entities are entitled to only one vote.

EXPERIMENTAL PLOTS
One to two long-term experimental plots have been installed in 22 farms with agrosilvo-pastoral production as their main activity. These experimental plots have a wide spatial distribution, covering all the Alentejo region, and are used to test and validate solutions, to increase the resilience of the Montado; being set to be monitored for a minimum of 10 years.
